Gale Katchur

Incumbent Mayoral Candidate - City of Fort Saskatchewan

Mayor from 2010 to current.

City Councillor from 2007 to 2010

17 years working for the City of Fort Saskatchewan in Planning & Public Works.

Prior to working for the City of Fort Saskatchewan, I worked with the Provincial and Federal Governments in various positions.

I am a leader with passion and willingness to listen to our citizens, businesses, and development community. I am a leader with accomplishments and has progressed our community forward over the past 11 years.

I work closely with our Regional, Provincial, and Federal partners to ensure we have the right infrastructure that attracts people to our community.

I have worked closely with our development community to ensure that planning is not just about the bricks and mortar, that it's about offering our citizens an exceptional quality of life with healthy neighbourhoods.

I am a leader with experience and community focused.

How will you support the City of Fort Saskatchewan's competitive advantage and market affordable housing? How do you see fees, levies, taxes and municipal cost control playing a role in housing affordability? Note: CHBA-ER refers to “market affordable housing” as housing that is market priced and meets the general requirements of affordability based on household income. Market affordable housing may include market rental housing and market home ownership.

I have built relationships with the development community and real estate community and I have an understanding there needs to be diverse housing in Fort Saskatchewan and under my leadership I have listened and educated myself on what makes housing affordable. I have supported infill development; I have supported the new zero lot line housing product. I have supported bringing back the 1.2 m side yard set backs because I understand it's more affordable for new home buyers. I have supported new diverse housing types because I understand people want homes to live in and they need to have choice.

What steps do you believe are necessary to reduce red tape and support business investment in the residential construction industry?

I believe our City Council's need to work with UDI and the developers to understand what the issues are and find solutions to resolve them. Permits and development agreements need to be simplified. Policies need to be updated to accept the new emerging trends that are happening that can improve the timeframes for approvals.

Do you support welcoming a diversity of housing types throughout Fort Saskatchewan?

Absolutely. I have supported the new housing types that the development community has introduced to Council over the past 11 years and as a result, Fort Saskatchewan has some of the most diverse housing in the region. People deserve a choice when they are looking at home ownership and I am proud to say that I have been the most progressive Mayor when it comes to ensuring our community has diverse housing.

Is there anything about your platform that you think CHBA-ER members should know?

My track record speaks for itself, I have a foundation of being credible and trustworthy. I understand our community's success is rooted in the care and wellbeing of others we look after and our community needs to be warm and welcoming and this is being accomplished. I have a deep knowledge and understanding of our future opportunities and challenges and understand there are some key priorities that need to be focused on moving forward including getting our new annexed lands ready for development including the MDP; ASP, and LUB's. Continuing to attract new businesses and industry to our community thereby creating jobs and prosperity. Continue to ensure our community is in a good financial position. We have low debit, good optimum reserves, well maintained infrastructure and we continue to invest in our community while keeping taxes affordable.
