Justin Laurie
Incumbent - Town of Stony Plain
|
After four years of dedicated service, I am excited to be seeking a second term as your elected representative on Stony Plain Town Council. A lifetime resident of the Tri-Region, My wife Tasha and I, along with our children Rory, Brayden and Kylah, have called Stony Plain home for over a decade. We love our active lifestyle and can often be found on the soccer field or enjoying the Umbach Off Leash park with our 9 month old rescue puppy Reese. In addition to being on Council, I am incredibly proud to be the Executive Director for Spruce Grove Soccer Association. Working with a not-for-profit organization that focuses on our youth is greatly important to me and being in the sport I grew up loving and playing makes it all that much better! My working career has included time in the Emergency Services sector as a Firefighter in the Town of Stony Plain and as a Manufactures Representative for one of the worlds largest fire equipment suppliers and for two Fire Apparatus Manufactures. Prior to that I spent a decade in the business sector of the wireless telecom industry working directly with various operational and government entities including the coordination of an Alberta wide technical services team.
Serving as your Elected Councillor in this last term I am proud to say that I have been a strong voice for residents in and out of our Council Chambers. Many of you reached out to me through email, phone call or |
in person conversation and I deeply value each and everyone of those interactions. My commitment for the next term is to continue to be open and accessible to residents to ensure I understand what matters most to you and am able to represent you in all aspects of the role. I will continue to push our administration to act with accountability and fiscal responsibility, while providing quality services and amenities that show value for the tax dollar spent. I have summarized many of my key focus areas in my Platform that can be found on a dedicated page on this website. The five key areas are Responsible Growth, Protecting Our Community, Expanding Our Opportunities, Active Lifestyles and Looking After Our Own. I encourage you to read through my platform and the items identified under each key pillar and reach out to me with any questions or comments you may have. |
How will you support the Stony Plain's competitive advantage and market affordable housing? How do you see fees, levies, taxes and municipal cost control playing a role in housing affordability? Note: CHBA-ER refers to “market affordable housing” as housing that is market priced and meets the general requirements of affordability based on household income. Market affordable housing may include market rental housing and market home ownership.
Stony Plain has been and continues to have some of the lowest residential taxation rates in the Metro Region. We have recently completed and offsite levy review and hope that this will increase our competitiveness. We have work to do regarding regulations on HIRF and how we can create smaller, less expensive lot pockets without impacting the safety of the residents. As a municipality we need to be cautious with our spending, particularly coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to ensure we keep the cost of municipal services affordable for homeowners. We have had great success over the last several years with high density rental developments and I’m encouraged by the development diversity we are seeing and hope it continues. |
What steps do you believe are necessary to reduce red tape and support business investment in the residential construction industry? From a municipal perspective we need to make sure we make our Permitting and Application processes as easy as possible and ensure it is being executed in a timely manner. |
Do you support welcoming a diversity of housing types throughout Stony Plain? Yes, we have diverse residents with diverse needs and our housing stock should match that. I also would like to see us explore unique opportunities like tiny homes and repurposed container homes where appropriate. |
Is there anything about your platform that you think CHBA-ER members should know? My platform contains a section specifically on responsible growth that includes sub categories of Complete Communities, Attracting and Retaining, and Growth Target. |
