Catherine McCook

 City of Beaumont

Beaumont is in my blood. Growing up on a farm just north of Beaumont and graduating high school in Beaumont has given me a lifetime of memories and friendships based in this growing city. Most importantly, I am a mother of two amazing children and the wife to a loving and supportive husband and we have two wonderful dogs.

My family history runs deep in Beaumont. My grandparents were original settlers of Beaumont. They were instrumental in growing the community of Beaumont. Growing up we were involved in building and running the Beaumont Agriculture Grounds, and I am proud to say that at 21 years of age I was the youngest District Commissioner for Clearwater Valley Pony Club, the local Pony Club. It was a great opportunity and responsibility for me to take on that leadership role and work with all our partners, volunteers and members to grow our program. I was also a founding member of the Beaumont Horse Trials and served on the committee for several years. It was great to see and experience community coming together to make things happen and even more exciting that the horse trials continue today.

My work ethic and ability to set and accomplish goals has helped me from an early age. In High School I won a gold medal in Curling at the Provincial Championships. That curling team was the first team at

Beaumont High to win a provincial championship. I've competed in Equestrian events at various levels while also taking on coaching roles. After high school I graduated with a diploma in Security & Investigations and obtained a Bachelor of Professional Arts Degree in Criminal Justice with honours which landed me on the Deans List. This has lead to a professional career where I worked in both nonprofit and private sectors. I have had opportunities to observe and help some of our societies most at risk citizens and create programs that would be adopted by the Provincial Government. My experience in the nonprofit has helped me gain an understanding and empathy towards vulnerable populations and I have often seen how breakdowns in both government and employers have put people in difficult situations. In the private sector I have investigated fraud, theft and worked with superiors and employees to develop programs aimed at the safety of employees and at preventing loss in the organization. I have a strong understanding of commerce and what it takes for a business to succeed as I worked closely with all areas of business operations. I believe that it is the employees of the business that need to be trusted and supported for a business to reach its full potential. People first! I'm currently employed as a Manager (Prairies) in Security and Loss Prevention.

I have also contracted the construction of numerous homes. I contracted the construction of a home in Beaumont that I lived in for numerous years, therefore, I am familiar with the challenges that home builders can face.

I continue to educate myself on matters of politics and business. I believe that an informed individual is empathetic, understanding and has a broad range of education and experience to draw from when forming opinions and making decisions.

How will you support the Beaumont's competitive advantage and market affordable housing? How do you see fees, levies, taxes and municipal cost control playing a role in housing affordability? Note: CHBA-ER refers to “market affordable housing” as housing that is market priced and meets the general requirements of affordability based on household income. Market affordable housing may include market rental housing and market home ownership.

Beaumont has a solid reputation as a desired place to live. It's rich history, French cultural character and small town feel has drawn people to Beaumont. We need to nurture what has made Beaumont a desirable place to live and build upon these traits to continue to market Beaumont to future residents.

What steps do you believe are necessary to reduce red tape and support business investment in the residential construction industry?

I am not familiar with what red tape is holding up business investments in the residential construction industry, however, part of my platform is to listen and learn what our residents concerns are and to also build collaborative relationships. Therefore, I will commit to learning and identifying what could be affecting investment in residential construction in Beaumont and will work with the rest of council to put in the appropriate steps to rectify any issues.

Do you support welcoming a diversity of housing types throughout Beaumont?

Yes! I believe we should have diverse housing options in our community.
