Steve Goodwin, General Supervisor, Safety Codes, Permits and Inspections City of Edmonton |
Steve started in construction at 18 as an electrician where he achieved master’s certification. From there he continued into plumbing where he achieved his red seal plumbing and gas certifications. He then entered into leadership roles and was fortunate enough to champion his own electrical and plumbing companies for the next 15 years with over 60 field technicians and 6 admin staff. He proceeded to sell the business and became a construction manager for a commercial company where he built several large commercial buildings from deep services to hand off at the same time as developing a 42-unit seniors housing complex. It was during this time that a keen interest in working closer with industry was established and he was fortunate to be awarded the role of Chief Plumbing and Gas Inspector with the City of Edmonton. This allowed him to connect with a broader spectrum of key stakeholders in industry and do a deeper dive into the intricacies of common pinch points and where both contractors and regulators have room to grow and do a better job of serving their clients. Fast forward to 2022 and Steve has been awarded the job of General Supervisor of inspections. This has again expanded his involvement with industry and allowed him to participate in the development of artificial technologies, safety programs, automated inspection assignment and routing, and other leading-edge projects that are shaping the future of industry. His continued passion for the building industry and broad-minded thinking are what he feels allows him to shine a different light on recurring issues and continue to grow his skills along with the ever-changing needs of our stakeholders as we all evolve together. |

Burke Perry, CHBA-ER Past President |
Burke Perry is the founder of the Perry Homes group of home building companies; Perry Signature Homes, Tapestry Developments and Look Homes. After four decades in business, Burke takes great pride in the success of his long-standing business partnerships and relationships. He believes in the value of group input and teamwork, and feels that disagreements must always be honoured, as they are essential for the sustained success of any partnership. He asserts that when contrasting views come together, the result is invariably an idea that is exceedingly better than each of the initial opposing views alone. A true self-starter, at age 21 Burke began building one home at a time, managing the entire process himself, persevering to reach annual sales revenues in excess of $100 million, while employing a team of 50 staff, and literally hundreds of sub trades and suppliers. Fittingly, Burke was one of the first local home builders to receive a Master Builder designation from the Professional Home Builder's Institute of Alberta. While homebuilding has allowed Burke the opportunity to be creative and innovative while satisfying the needs of the consumer, he is also very conscious about sustainability, and the impact his product has on the environment. Burke Perry Homes was one of the first three builders in Edmonton to earn an R-2000 designation in early 1990s, and one of a handful of builders in the area today to achieve Built Green Certification - the current standard for energy efficient and sustainable building practices. A prolific volunteer, Burke is passionate about giving back to his community. He's been an instructor at the Professional Home Builders Institute, board Chair of the Alberta New Home Warranty Program, President of both Edmonton and Alberta Home Builders Associations, and, he is an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Home Builders Association, Edmonton. Burke is a co-founder of the Edmonton Region Homebuilders’ Charity Funds that provides funding for inner city social housing and residential trade scholarships at NAIT. He is also an ardent supporter of The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, Kids With Cancer Society, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Burke holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. |
