Downtowns will rise again as energy costs kill love affair with suburbs

EDMONTON - North American suburbs are fading, the inner cities are rising, and one factor driving this trend is the same human hunger for contact and community that has made social networking sights like Twitter and Facebook so popular.
“I would say that for young people now a certain kind of sociability which they crave, which is a combination of this constant interfacing that they have online and gathering in social groups, is something that leads them to want to be in walkable places in cities,” says a leading urban planner, Toronto architect Ken Greenberg, who will be the keynote speaker at a conference on revitalizing Edmonton on Dec. 15. The event is called Downtown X-posed and is being hosted by the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.
