When new neighbourhoods are planned, land is set aside to meet the anticipated need for schools, parks, and recreation. If land originally set aside for a school is no longer needed, a school board may declare it surplus. (For more information about the school planning process, see School Land Use Planning).
When a school site is declared surplus by one school board, the other two Edmonton school boards have the first right to acquire the site. If none of the school boards acquire the surplus site, then, in accordance with the Joint Use Agreement (JUA): Land,” signed by the City with the three Edmonton area school boards, the City of Edmonton has the option to acquire it. The City can acquire vacant sites on reserve land for one dollar and sites on non-reserve land at market value. The City welcomes the opportunity to consider how a surplus site could be used to meet the needs of our evolving city.
